Tour and Tourist Information Guide for the Market Town of Abergavenny

Situated around twenty miles from the English border, the Welsh town of Abergavenny is surrounded by hills and mountains. The perfect base for exploring the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park, this lovely town has more than its share of history, a wide variety of shops and plenty of choice for those looking for outdoor activities as well as its own Food Festival.

For sporting enthusiasts, Abergavenny caters for just about everything from fishing and sailing to mountain biking and cycling, and from hang gliding and paragliding to pony trekking and walking. Golfers can play a round or two at the 18-hole Wernddu Golf Club, and swimmers can take a dip in the pool at the town’s Leisure Centre. If you have any energy left, you could play squash or badminton or try out the fitness suite here too.

Abergavenny Castle, although mostly in ruins, retains much of its curtain wall, which stretches up to where the 12th century gatehouse would have been. The castle can be found to the south of the town centre. Abergavenny Museum, detailing the town’s history as well as having temporary art exhibitions, is housed in an early 19th century hunting lodge and is free to enter.

Abergavenny has a popular market, situated right in the town centre which is held weekly on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Victorian market hall also hosts specialist markets such as those for antiques, crafts and farmers’ markets.

There’s a wealth of small, individual shops dotted around the town and a modern shopping centre too, with the Cibi Walk arcade offering shoppers all the usual high street stores.

St Mary’s Priory Church is the parish church and is one of the largest and finest in Wales. It was originally part of a 12th century monastery of Benedictine, or Black Monks and is open daily for visitors.

The Tithe Barn, which dates from the same period, forms part of the St Mary’s Priory Church complex. It houses a fascinating exhibition, education centre, food hall and shop.

Abergavenny has two main theatres – the Borough Theatre, where a variety of plays, shows and musicals are performed throughout the year.
The recently refurbished Melville Theatre is a small theatre that has a regular programme of plays, films and workshops.

Linda Vista Gardens is the place to go if you want to enjoy more peace and quiet. It is also known as Beautiful View Gardens because of its stunning views across the meadows towards the Blorenge Mountain. It can be found just off Tudor Street.

Bailey Park is also near to the town centre and is a popular green area where annual events such as the Abergavenny Steam Rally, the Custom Car Show and the It's a Knockout competition are held.
