Description:
The Malvern Hills form a dramatic landmark visible for miles, rising high above the surrounding landscape. The bare grass covered hills contrast with the surrounding lowland farmland and woods. The name 'Malvern' derives from the Celtic for 'bare hill' and the hills have probably been used for upland grazzing for thousands of years. Moreover the Malvern Hills have played different roles in the lives of the inhabitants of the area, from prehistory to the present.

Herefordshire Beacon (summit, 338 metres) is one of the most noticeable peaks in the Malvern Hills. The top of the hills is surrounded by the ditches and ramparts of British Camp, an Iron Age hillfort. This important hillfort occupies, one of the most dramatic, locations in the region. Although British Camp is a well known archaelogical monument, it has never been extensivley excavated. However archaeologists have surveyed the valuable features of the monument in detail and gained a great deal of information about the site. The first phase of the hillfort was a small oval enclosure marked marked by a deep ditch with an entrance on the north ditch. Later in the iron age the hillfort was expanded with a ditch and a rampart enclosing a much larger area.

Take a Walk along Malvern Hills and you will be rewarded of fantastic views of Worcestershire, parts of Gloucestershire and Warwickshire spread out before you. Along with views of Herefordshire and beyond to the Black Mountains.
