Description: The Pump Rooms were designed in 1862 by James Cranston of Birmingham. It is said that he based the design on principles he had developed for the construction of greenhouses. The Round Market or butter cross in Market square is a further example of his work. It is built in Chinese Oriental gothic style and is one of the earliest examples of pre fabrication. The metal prefabricated sheets were made in Birmingham and assembled on site. The building forms part of an earlier plan to promote Tenbury Wells as a spa Town, after a spring was found in the grounds of the Crow Inn. The 58ft well is situated beneathe the octaganal tower. Sadly, the project proved unsuccessful and in 1939 the wells were filled in. The building gradually fell into decline untill it was restored in 1998 with the help of English Heritage. The building is now used as a community centre and as an office for Tenbury Wells Town council. The building is open to the public on certain days of the year.
