The ancient market town of Tenbury Wells, located in the Teme Valley, is close to the borders of Shropshire and Herefordshire. Sitting in an unspoilt area of England, the town became a spa in the 1800s when the mineral springs were discovered.
Tenbury is an excellent base for a variety of outdoor pursuits, situated as it is in the borders of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire and near to the Welsh Marches.

Annual festivals and other local events include the summertime Tenbury in Bloom, the Tenbury Countryside Show in August, Applefest in October and the Mistletoe Festival in December.

The town is home to several fine 17th century buildings, the most evident today being the inns, particularly the Royal Oak, and the most ancient being Pembroke House.

The Pump Rooms in Tenbury are a well-known sight and visitor attraction. Built in 1862 to house baths where the mineral waters were available, they have a very distinctive design that some refer to as Chinese Gothic. James Cranston was the architect and he based it on greenhouses he had designed, replacing the glass with sheets of wrought iron.

The Butter Market is more usually called the Round Market and is another familiar, if unusual, sight in the town. It dates back to the mid 1800s and was originally an open-plan structure. Built by James Cranston so that farmers’ wives could sell their butter and poultry, it is now famous for the Holly and Mistletoe sales, which take place here every year on the Tuesday before Christmas.

Tenbury Museum holds some very interesting pieces – almost all donated – including a number of old surgical instruments donated by Tenbury Hospital. The museum tells the story of the town’s history together with a collection of relics from Tenbury’s 19th century spa.

The Town Trail is one of the best ways to see the town and to learn more of its history. Taking around an hour, you will visit the Pump Rooms and the Burgage, the Round Market, Tenbury Museum and the Stepping Stones as well as the parish church of St Mary. Shorter walks are available and guides can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre.

Close to Tenbury is Burford House Gardens, which are free to visit and are open every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The four-acre site, with its sweeping lawns, meadows, trees, gigantic wisteria, and around 2,000 varieties of plants – along with a Georgian turfed bridge – is a must for garden lovers.
